ABSTRACT
The possibility of acoustic assessment of plankton distribution in the sea is studied. Formulas for the sound scattering coefficient are in the basis. The formulas include different semiempirical expressions for scattering cross-section by single heterogeneous inclusions and two types of plankton distribution functions depending on the sizes known from the scientific literature as exponential and Gaussian ones. The obtained system of equations allows to estimate important characteristics of water bioproductivity: mass concentration of plankton and their total amount in the interval of sizes. The comparative assessment of the concentration of plankton on the basis the sound scattering data obtained in the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk are presented.
